Play croquet at Grundy

See how people of the Victorian era spent their leisure time

The public is invited to spend a summer evening Victorian-style at the Grundy Museum, 610 Radcliffe St., Bristol, on Friday, Aug. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m.

This family-oriented program will include a brief introduction to the games people played and allow participants to try their hand at Victorian leisure activities. A short presentation will open the evening, and then the games begin.

Croquet took the Victorian world by storm. The game was popular for many reasons, primarily because men and women could compete together. The rivalry was fierce, and accusations of cheating were just part of the fun. Women in particular were targeted for cheating, as sometimes their long skirts “accidentally” moved a ball to their advantage.

But croquet was not the only option for relaxing summer evenings. During the event, play croquet, badminton and other activities on River Park Lawn. These activities highlight how people in the past spent their leisure time.

This is a free family program. Come dressed in Victorian-inspired summer attire. Light refreshments will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring picnic snacks to eat on the lawn. No alcohol.
