Newtown Athletic Club owner Jim Worthington has been reappointed to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition. After a 40-plus-year career in the health and fitness industry, Worthington said he’s more than prepared to stand up for the ability of all Americans to achieve a better way of life through healthy living.
The mission of the Council is to increase sports participation among youth of all backgrounds and abilities and to promote active lifestyles for all Americans. The Council was established through an executive order by the President of the United States.
It began in 1956, when President Eisenhower established the President’s Council on Youth and Fitness. After more than six decades, it is now the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition, and strives to engage, educate and empower all Americans to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity and good nutrition.
This is Worthington’s second term on the Council, which meets several times throughout the year to discuss initiatives that include the development of programming, the creation of public private partnerships and more to support the mission. Council members represent the mission to the public and serve to manage and maintain the work of the Council, which is overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services.
“Serving on the Council has been an honor for me and a culmination of my life’s work, which has been to bring opportunities for healthy living not only to our community, but to the nation and the world through my work with IHRSA (the International Health Racquet and Sportsclub Association) by serving on their board for five years,” said Worthington.
