The Newtown Athletic Club recently presented a check for $2,500 to Potential Inc. in Newtown. This represents monies raised from a LaBlast event held at the NAC on Dec. 16, featuring Dancing with the Stars championship dancer Louis Van Amstel.

The event attracted almost 200 participants to raise funds for Potential Inc., a local company that assists individuals with autism in reaching their full educational, social and emotional potential by applying and developing innovative, evidence-based approaches.

LaBlast Fitness is a partner-free dance fitness workout created by Amstel. It’s accessible for all levels, from the absolute beginner to the experienced dancer. Amstel brought his class to the NAC to provide a fun fitness experience while raising money for an important cause.

“This was an amazing opportunity to work out with a world-renowned choreographer and dance celebrity, while raising funds for autism programming right here in our community,” said Linda Mitchell, NAC director of public relations and charitable giving.

In addition to Amstel, Robert Wallop, an international Special Olympics dance champion, was a special guest. Wallop is a certified LaBlast instructor and travels the world promoting movement, health and wellness.

Students from Potential Inc., members of the Rock Starz NAC Cheerleading organization, NAC members and community members participated in the event, which was held in the NAC gymnasium.

NAC is preparing to offer the LaBlast program for its members and become a host site for students who wish to train for the Special Olympics in the Dancesport Division.

The Newtown Athletic Club is located at 120 Pheasant Run, Newtown. Visit newtownathletic.com for more information.
