The Women’s Humane Society, America’s first animal shelter and adoption program, has gone through a re-branding campaign and is doing business as Women’s Animal Center. To commemorate its milestone 150th anniversary in 2019, the name change reflects the organization’s renewed and ongoing commitment to the region’s animals.

The name Women’s Animal Center further establishes the organization as a center that comprises a broad spectrum of services and expertise, beyond that of an animal shelter, and it conveys a sense of unity and shared love of animals within and among the local and national communities. In addition, the name continues to honor the important role of women in the founding, history and evolution of the organization and of animal welfare at large in the country.

Catherine Malkemes, CEO of Women’s Animal Center, explained the significance of the new name. She said, “Our name was originally The Women’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Women’s SPCA). In 1981 we became Women’s Humane Society, which over time did not fully reflect the type of organization we are and the vital services we provide for animals. We are excited about the new name — Women’s Animal Center — because it states that helping animals is our purpose and our priority. Every day our dedicated staff and volunteers are committed to making life better for animals –and the people who love them. Our name had to reflect and convey that fact.”

She added, “We are truly a center for animals, offering a variety of services to improve their lives. Our animal shelter, adoptions and full-service veterinary hospital are at the heart of what we do, and our full complement of services includes pet training, community events, educational outreach and more. We understand what is needed for a healthy and happy pet and we deliver a variety of services to meet those needs for residents and pet owners in our region.”

Women’s Animal Center worked with a team of marketing experts and obtained feedback from the community to develop the new brand. The new website, www.womensanimalcenter.org, has been launched. Signage, collateral materials, uniforms will all reflect the new name.

Women’s Animal Center is located at 3839 Richlieu Road in Bensalem. For further information, call 215–750–3100 or visit www.womensanimalcenter.org.
