Though we’re only nearing the halfway point of 2018, it’s already been a jam-packed year for Pennsbury Manor. As the former estate of Pennsylvania’s founder William Penn, it only made sense for its dedicated staff and volunteers to commemorate the 300th anniversary of his death with special activities and events. From the historical escape rooms, which sold out instantly, to The Great Law on display for the first time during Charter Day, Pennsbury has given the public ample opportunities to learn about Penn’s lasting legacy.

Now, as we make the abrupt transition from weekly snow threats to 90-degree weather, Pennsbury is mixing into its 17th century-inspired programming a modern-day hobby — yoga. According to managing director Sarah Rudich, the idea to begin hosting this popular pastime was first tossed around last year during the planning phase of Penn’s legacy year.

“How can we utilize the property for health and fitness?” she said.

At the time, outdoor yoga classes were popping up everywhere across Philadelphia. Men and women of all ages vied to perform intricate stretches on rooftops, in parks and along Penn’s Landing. Rudich and her colleagues thought, why can’t this happen at Pennsbury? Time and again, she’s heard visitors refer to the estate, especially the waterfront view by the Manor, as “peaceful.” It would be the perfect spot to destress after a long day.

Beginning this month, that vision is turning into a reality as Pennsbury hosts two styles of yoga classes that are geared toward beginners and experts alike. Shake Your Soul Yoga incorporates both dancing and meditative breathing techniques into the practice, offering the chance to work up a sweat and relax at the same time. Upcoming dates include May 12, June 9, July 14, Aug. 11, Sept. 8, Oct. 13 and Nov. 10, all from 10 to 11 a.m.

The second option is Shake Your Seat Yoga. Though it operates similarly to Shake Your Soul, all moves are done in a chair, making it perfect for seniors or those looking for a low-impact workout. Upcoming dates include May 12, June 9, July 14, Aug. 11, Sept. 8, Oct. 13 and Nov. 10, all from noon to 1 p.m.

Weather pending, all classes will be taught by a Pennsbury volunteer outside along the scenic Delaware River at the cost of $10 per person.

“We’re excited to use the beautiful riverfront as a backdrop,” she said.

Though Rudich said there’s not a defined cap, Pennsbury is looking to keep the number of students between 10 and 15 so early pre-registration is encouraged. Attendees are welcome to bring their own water and yoga mats/chairs, but necessary materials will be provided onsite if needed.

The classes themselves have virtually no historical ties (as fun as it would be to have the resident Penn impersonator as an instructor), but they do align with what Rudich said is a new health and meditation focus Pennsbury is slowly rolling out this year. The estate regularly incorporates lessons and demonstrations on how Penn’s wife Hannah treated illnesses in the 1600s. While this programming will remain intact, Rudich’s hope is these yoga classes will help bring Pennsbury into the 21st century.

Registration is open for the May 12 classes. For more information, visit pennsburymanor.org or facebook.com/PennsburyManor. Pennsbury Manor is located at 400 Pennsbury Memorial Road, Morrisville. ••
