In celebration of Juneteenth, a federal holiday that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans each year on June 19, the African American Museum of Bucks County, in partnership with Sesame Place, is presenting The Journey to Juneteenth — an exhibit about the history and significance of the holiday, on display to the public in the Sesame Studio Theater through June 28.

Viewers are taken on a journey and learn about significant events in U.S. history relating to the struggle for freedom. Topics include abolitionism, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Civil War and other key events that led up to the commemoration of Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Shown on a loop in the theater is a short video on the meaning of Juneteenth, as well as related Sesame Street content.

“Sesame Place is honored to be a partner of the African American Museum of Bucks County and to provide a platform for the museum to both educate and connect with guests,” said Cathy Valeriano, park president of Sesame Place Philadelphia.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Sesame Place for Juneteenth,” said Linda Salley, president of the AAMBC. “It is our hope that everyone who visits the exhibit will learn the meaning behind the importance of Juneteenth. This exhibit will further educate the public on the untold stories of the African American experience in history, while inspiring the future.”
