In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lower Makefield’s Nicky Christopher became the Birthday Lawn Bandit, decorating neighbors’ lawns for birthdays, graduations and other celebrations, all while fundraising for Alpha Bravo Canine: a nonprofit that raises, trains and donates service dogs to veterans who suffer from PTSD, traumatic brain injuries and other disabilities. The organization also offers lifetime support to each veteran/service dog duo.

His efforts soon transformed into Strolling for Service Dogs, an annual fundraiser that’s celebrating its third year on April 20, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Garden of Reflection 9/11 Memorial, 1950 Woodside Road, Yardley.

Cost to register is $25, and includes a swag bag (T-shirt, dog bandana, sponsor giveaways) and participation in a dog walk. The day also includes food and local vendors, games for kids, face painting and raffles (called at 2 p.m.). Children 10 and under are free.

All dogs attending must be human- and dog-friendly. If you don’t have a dog to walk, organizers will provide a stuffed pooch. Or, locals are welcome to simply stop by and enjoy the activities and raffles, all while supporting a vital mission.

In 2023, thanks to the attendance of over 500 guests, more than $29,000 was raised, completely covering the cost of training one service dog, with some funds left over. The dog was Scotty, who was matched with his veteran soon after the event.
