Michigan Man Sentenced to 20–40 Years After 730-Mile Bensalem Arson

Date:

February 12, 2026

Shortly before 5 a.m. on February 10, 2025, police and fire crews responded to a house fire in the 5200 block of Merganser Way in Bensalem Township, Bucks County. Video from the scene showed heavy flames engulfing the residence. Investigators later determined that an accelerant had been ignited, triggering an explosion that leveled the rear of the home and trapped six adults inside. Three occupants escaped by jumping from a second-floor window. All six victims were transported for treatment of minor burns and smoke inhalation. The residence was completely destroyed, and the family’s two dogs were killed in the fire.

Authorities identified Harrison Jones, 22, of Rockford, Michigan, as the suspect. Investigators said he drove more than 700 miles from Michigan to Pennsylvania to set the fire. During a news conference held one week after the incident, William McVay stated, “He drove over 730 miles — 11 hours — to do what he did and drove directly back home.” McVay added, “This family was extremely lucky to survive this. It is clear to us that Mr. Jones had murderous intentions.”

Police said Jones was the former boyfriend of a 21-year-old woman who had recently entered into an online relationship with a 22-year-old man who lived at the Merganser Way residence. Investigators described the motive as “revenge-fueled” following the end of that relationship.

Surveillance cameras in the neighborhood recorded the suspect’s movements before and after the fire was set. Bensalem detectives reviewed residential surveillance footage and used Automated License Plate Readers to identify a 2021 Volkswagen Passat registered in Michigan. The license plate information led authorities to Jones. Michigan law enforcement officers took him into custody and observed visible burn marks on his arms consistent with injuries sustained in the explosion. He remained in custody in Michigan pending extradition in the days following his arrest.

At the time charges were filed, Jones was 21 and faced six counts of attempted homicide and arson. He later pleaded no contest to six counts of attempted homicide and two counts of aggravated animal cruelty related to the deaths of the two dogs. He also pleaded guilty to additional offenses connected to the February 10 fire, including arson and risking catastrophe.

On Thursday, Matt Weintraub sentenced Jones to 20 to 40 years in state prison. According to the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office, he will not receive credit for time served. The court also ordered him to pay more than $500,000 in restitution for the destruction of the property.

During the sentencing hearing, one victim testified that she was blinded by smoke and believed she would die. She credited her father with helping her escape. The family also honored their two dogs in court, stating that the animals alerted them to danger and provided precious seconds to evacuate.

Judge Weintraub said Jones’ actions were planned and coordinated over several hours as he traveled across state lines. “Physical wounds heal, private property can be replaced,” the judge said. “But pets can never be replaced, and trauma can never be erased.”
