Kyle Schwarber’s Four-Homer, Nine-RBI Game Leads Phillies Over Braves

Date:

September 4, 2025

On Thursday night, August 28, Kyle Schwarber hit four home runs in the Philadelphia Phillies’ 19-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Park, becoming the fourth Phillies player and the 21st player in Major League Baseball history to accomplish the feat.

Schwarber went 4-for-6 with nine runs batted in, setting a Phillies record for most RBIs in a single game. His four home runs raised his season total to 49, a career high that gave him the outright National League lead and moved him within one of Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners, who leads the majors with 50. Schwarber also leads the majors with 119 RBIs, which is a career high. He has 333 career home runs across 11 seasons with the Chicago Cubs and the Phillies, and his previous career high was 47, set in 2023 with Philadelphia.

Phillies starter Aaron Nola allowed three runs in the top of the first inning on 37 pitches, and in the bottom half, Schwarber, batting second, steadied the team with a one-out solo home run on a 2-1 curveball from Braves starter Cal Quantrill that carried into the right-field seats. Schwarber flied out to center field in the second inning, but in the fourth, after Quantrill left the game with one out and two runners on base, Schwarber faced left-hander Austin Cox and sent a 3-2 curveball over the wall in right field.

In the fifth inning, as fans chanted “M-V-P! M-V-P!,” Schwarber hit a three-run opposite-field home run off Cox that gave Philadelphia a 15-3 lead, and in the seventh inning, he added his fourth of the night, a three-run shot to right field off Wander Suero that extended the score to 18-4. His final at-bat in the eighth inning ended on a popout to short left field against third baseman Vidal Bruján, who was pitching.

Schwarber had never hit four home runs in a game before, though he previously had three games with three home runs. He became the first Phillies player to hit four in a game since Mike Schmidt did it against the Chicago Cubs in April 1976, joining Schmidt, Ed Delahanty, and Chuck Klein as the only Phillies to achieve the mark. His performance was the 21st four-homer game in MLB history and was the third of the 2025 season, following Nick Kurtz of the Oakland Athletics last month and Eugenio Suárez of the Arizona Diamondbacks in April against the Braves. Before 2025, the most recent four-homer game was by J.D. Martinez in 2017.

Sportsbooks adjusted betting odds after Schwarber’s performance. DraftKings listed him at +500 to win the National League Most Valuable Player award, while FanDuel set him at +600, and earlier in the season, some sportsbooks had posted his MVP odds at +10000. Shohei Ohtani remained the favorite at both DraftKings and FanDuel. In World Series futures, DraftKings listed the Phillies at +600, FanDuel at +800, and BetMGM at +750, while the team had opened near +1200 at other sportsbooks. FanDuel listed Philadelphia at +450 to win the National League.

Ahead of their next game, FanDuel listed the Milwaukee Brewers as −154 favorites and BetMGM listed them at −150, with Covers reporting expert picks at 84 percent for Milwaukee and 16 percent for Philadelphia. Schwarber’s player prop markets, including his home run line, were adjusted upward after his four-home run game. Philadelphia made bullpen changes at the trade deadline, acquiring Jhoan Durán from the Minnesota Twins on July 30–31 in exchange for Mick Abel and Eduardo Tait and adding Harrison Bader on August 1. On August 26, the Phillies placed Jordan Romano on the 15-day injured list with right middle finger inflammation.

Philadelphia’s offense also included home runs from J.T. Realmuto, Max Kepler, and Bryce Harper, and the Phillies finished with 20 hits. Quantrill took the loss, falling to 4-12, while Nola earned the win and improved to 3-7.

After Nola’s difficult first inning, Schwarber’s one-out home run in the bottom of the first began the Phillies’ scoring, and his subsequent three home runs built on that start. By the end of the game, his four home runs and nine RBIs set a franchise record and produced one of the rarest single-game accomplishments in MLB history.
