Paul George Injury Complicates Sixers’ Offseason Plans

July 24, 2025

On Monday, July 14, 2025, the Philadelphia 76ers announced that forward Paul George underwent a successful arthroscopic procedure on his left knee. According to the team’s statement, the procedure, carried out by Dr. Jonathan L. Glashow, was performed to treat an injury George sustained during a recent workout. The team confirmed that George has begun a rehabilitation program and will be re-evaluated prior to the start of training camp.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that George suffered the injury during an on-court workout the previous week. After visiting a doctor on Friday, the decision was made for George to undergo arthroscopic surgery. According to Charania, doctors believed the injury would linger without surgical intervention. He also reported that George was never fully healthy during the 2024–25 season, ending it while rehabbing groin, knee, and finger injuries.

Kyle Neubeck reported that the procedure performed was “essentially an arthroscopic clean up” and that it “did not involve the major ligaments.”

In the 2024–25 NBA season, George played in 41 games for the 76ers. He averaged 16.2 points per game, shot 43 percent from the field, and also posted averages of 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists. George was ruled out for the season starting March 4, 2025, due to injuries related to his left knee and left adductor muscle. He also sustained a left pinkie injury during the same season.

The 76ers finished the 2024–25 season with a record of 24 wins and 58 losses. The team selected VJ Edgecombe with the No. 3 overall pick in the June 2025 NBA Draft. According to the Associated Press, training camps for the 2025–26 NBA season begin in September. The 76ers are scheduled to play two preseason games in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, against the New York Knicks on October 2 and October 4.

Sixers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey spoke to reporters in Las Vegas on Friday, July 12. He stated that for the 76ers to contend for a title in the 2025–26 season, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George need to be healthy. Morey also said that Embiid is expected to be ready for training camp. Jared McCain, who had surgery on his left lateral meniscus, is also on track for training camp, according to Morey.

The Sixers’ frontcourt options are affected by George’s injury. With George temporarily sidelined, their current options at the power forward position are second-round draft pick Johni Broome and recently acquired Trendon Watford. Broome’s NBA-level readiness is currently undetermined. Watford has an established relationship and chemistry with Tyrese Maxey.

Paul George signed a four-year maximum contract with Philadelphia before the 2024–25 season. George and Joel Embiid are together slated to earn over $106 million for the 2025–26 season.

The injury history from the previous season affected multiple players. Joel Embiid appeared in 19 games, Jared McCain played 23, Kyle Lowry played 35, Tyrese Maxey played 52, Eric Gordon played 39, and Andre Drummond played 40.

Quentin Grimes is a restricted free agent going into the 2025–26 season. After joining the 76ers mid-season, Grimes averaged 21.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. His shooting splits were close to 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from three-point range. The 76ers have the right to match any offer Grimes receives.

Paul George previously missed time with other injuries in prior seasons. In 2021–22 with the Clippers, he missed 43 games due to a torn UCL in his right elbow. In 2019–20, he had shoulder surgery and missed 11 games. In 2014–15 with the Indiana Pacers, George played just six games due to a compound leg fracture.

George is currently 35 years old and has been selected as an All-Star nine times. It is not yet known whether George will be available for the start of the 2025–26 NBA season. The 76ers’ statement indicates that he will be re-evaluated prior to the beginning of training camp. If George is not ready, it would be the second consecutive season in which he missed the start due to a knee injury.
