76ers Retain Paul George Through 2027–28 Under $212 Million Agreement

Date:

July 17, 2025

Paul George signed a four-year, $212 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers on July 6, 2024. As of that date, he is under contract with the team and is not a free agent.

In the 2024–25 NBA season, George played in 41 games for the 76ers. He averaged 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists. During the same season, teammate Joel Embiid experienced injury issues, and the 76ers finished with a 24-58 record.

Before joining the 76ers, George played for the Los Angeles Clippers from 2019 to 2024. While with the Clippers, he was selected as an NBA All-Star three times and helped the team reach the Western Conference Finals in 2021.

After signing with the 76ers, George was spotted in Las Vegas during the NBA Summer League. He attended the Los Angeles Clippers’ Summer League opener against the Houston Rockets. At the event, George was seen interacting with Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue, team owner Steve Ballmer, and forward Kawhi Leonard.

Reports indicated that some interpreted George’s attendance at the Clippers’ Summer League game as a possible political move related to a future return. However, the source notes that it is more likely that his appearance was simply a night of entertainment, as George is a California native.

Following the 2024–25 season, there were rumors that the 76ers might consider trading George to the Utah Jazz. Nonetheless, the team has opted to retain him for a second season.

Fans have expressed a strong interest in seeing George play live. According to the source, a large number of fans are attending games in person to watch him. Although ticket prices can be high, some fans have turned to reliable loans to make attendance possible.

George has received public support from Joel Embiid regarding their on-court fit. In an interview on SportsCenter, Embiid stated, “Yes, I think as far as the fit, it looks amazing. It is great, especially when you have a big … I don’t like to call myself a big, but when you have a player that posts up, and that is quite a bit, you need to have willing shooters and guys that are not afraid to pull the trigger.

In the 2025 NBA Draft, the 76ers selected former Baylor guard VJ Edgecombe with the No. 3 overall pick. Edgecombe made his Summer League debut in Salt Lake City against No. 5 pick Ace Bailey of the Utah Jazz. Edgecombe scored 28 points on 13-of-27 shooting and added 10 rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and one steal.

George discussed Edgecombe’s debut performance on his podcast, Podcast P with Paul George. He said, “I thought he looked good. I thought he looked good on both ends of the floor. It’s dope to see the difference between college and NBA with spacing. Because, you know, he was able to get to his midi.

George also said of Edgecombe, “He got that dog in him. Watching him, it was like watching a young Jimmy. He moves like Jimmy. Kind of has that mid-range tenacity.” He further commented, “VJ showed flashes of stardom. I love the poise and patience in the pick-and-roll. That’s not something that comes natural, especially, for young guys that aren’t point guards.

Edgecombe is currently recovering from a thumb sprain, which caused him to miss the 76ers’ Summer League game against the San Antonio Spurs.
