Archbishop Wood Dominates Crestwood to Reach PIAA Girls Basketball Finals

Archbishop Wood basketball made a powerful statement in the PIAA girls basketball Class 5A state semifinal basketball game, dismantling Crestwood 68-29 at Parkland High School on March 22, 2025.

The Vikings wasted no time establishing their dominance, storming out to a 22-5 lead in the first quarter, a blitz led by sophomore phenom Ryan Carter. With 25 points, six steals, five rebounds, and two blocks, Carter proved why she’s one of the most highly sought-after players in her class. Despite being invited to the prestigious Stewie 30 Elite Camp, she chose to stay with her team, a decision that paid off spectacularly.

Archbishop Wood’s relentless full-court pressure left Crestwood scrambling. By halftime, the Comets trailed 36-11, with 15 first-half turnovers exposing their struggle to break Wood’s aggressive press. The Vikings’ game plan was clear: suffocate their opponent with ball pressure and force mistakes that quickly turned into transition buckets or wide-open three-pointers.

The sharpshooting continued to be a key factor for Archbishop Wood, as they drained 11 three-pointers, following their staggering 17 three-pointers from the previous round. Emily Knouse, heading to St. Joe’s next season, added firepower alongside Carter with clutch shooting.

Crestwood, while giving their best efforts, couldn’t match Archbishop Wood’s speed or efficiency. Head coach Mary Mushock Namey acknowledged the skill gap but emphasized the importance of the experience for her team. Their historic season ended 24-5, having captured their first District 2 championship and state playoff wins.

For Archbishop Wood, the victory marked their 24th consecutive state tournament win as they pursued a fifth consecutive state championship. With a team built around high-octane defense and elite shooting, the Vikings are primed for another title run when they meet South Fayette next week in Hershey.

South Fayette arrives in the finals riding high after a 50-36 win over Peters Township. Known for their own suffocating defense, the Lions will look to stifle Archbishop Wood’s explosive offense. But with Carter playing at a level well beyond her years, Wood remains the heavy favorite.

The PIAA girls basketball Class 5A finals are set for March 29 at the Giant Center in Hershey, where Archbishop Wood will try to add yet another chapter to their storied legacy.
