In the latest identity document news, the federal REAL ID enforcement deadline is approaching on May 7, 2025, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is stepping up efforts to help residents prepare.
PennDOT has announced that the Bensalem Driver License Center at 4201 Neshaminy Boulevard will open for special working hours on Monday, January 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Starting in May 2025, a REAL ID-compliant license or another federally accepted form of identification will be required for certain federal purposes, such as the ability to board domestic flights, enter military bases, and access secure federal facilities.
Each REAL ID includes a unique PennDOT ID number, which ensures secure identification for users.
This news is especially timely in Bucks County, as more than 2.5 million Pennsylvanians have already opted into the voluntary REAL ID program.
For those unsure if they need one, PennDOT offers an online wizard to help residents determine if a REAL ID is the right choice for their needs.
To obtain a REAL ID, applicants must bring required documentation, such as proof of identity (like a certified birth certificate or valid passport), proof of Social Security number, two proofs of current Pennsylvania address, and, if applicable, proof of all legal name changes.
PennDOT states how important it is for documents to be accurate and consistent to avoid delays.
A REAL ID includes a one-time fee of $30 plus the standard renewal fee for a driver’s license or photo ID.
Once processed, residents can receive their REAL ID by mail within 15 days or immediately at designated REAL ID Centers.
As they are offering special service hours on a day when the center is typically closed, PennDOT is creating a unique opportunity for residents to complete this essential process without the usual crowds or scheduling conflicts.
Additional hours are a thoughtful response to the increasing demand for REAL IDs as the federal enforcement deadline draws nearer.
