The African American Museum of Bucks County is presenting a jazz concert to the community, featuring Shantel Hubert and jazz band Social Justice, on March 24, in the auditorium at Pennswood Village, 1382 Newtown-Langhorne Road, Newtown. The concert begins at 3 p.m. and will be immediately followed by a wine and cheese reception at 4 p.m.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at aamuseumbucks.org/events.
Through original musical performance, poetry and lecture, singer and educator Hubert celebrates the great American poet, playwright, novelist and Harlem Renaissance artist Langston Hughes. Backed by a jazz trio, Hubert’s performance of “Intersection Between the Veiled and the Masked” examines Hughes’ timeless work in connection with contemporary calls for social and racial justice.
“During these especially challenging times, it is important to share how artists, especially writers of the Harlem Renaissance, used their work as a vehicle for community upliftment, connection and social change,” said Hubert.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to the museum’s building fund to further renovate its new home at Boone Farm, located just down the road from Pennswood Village near the intersection of Route 413 and Bridgetown Pike in Middletown Township. The Bucks County Commissioners leased the property to the AAMBC for $1 per year and have handled the costs of construction and renovation at the historic stone building. The museum needs to raise an additional $2 million this year to complete renovations and outfit the interior as an operating museum. Its goal is to open in early 2025.
