The most wonderful time of the year has officially come to Bensalem Township.
From a twinkling tree lighting and visit from Santa Claus to various toy collection drives, much of the community is embracing the Christmas spirit.
On Dec. 9, residents of all ages gathered outside of the township’s municipal building, located at 2400 Byberry Road, for the annual tree-lighting ceremony. After attendees counted down in unison, the tree, flanked by snowmen and other holiday creatures, lit up the evening in an array of colorful lights, including a shining red bow on top.
Along with the tree lighting, residents enjoyed a drive-through visit with jolly old Saint Nick, as well as Mrs. Claus, who cheerfully waved to passersby.
Drivers were also greeted by elves and snowmen, including Olaf from Disney’s Frozen. Young attendees got to go home with goodies, including candy canes.
On hand at the event were Bensalem council president Ed Kisselback, secretary Joseph Knowles and member Michelle Benitez, in addition to state Rep. KC Tomlinson.
“I’d like to thank everybody that took their time out to make it look so wonderful in our township, and give this wonderful night to the families and children to enjoy this holiday season,” said Benitez.
Tomlinson added, “It certainly is the most wonderful time of the year.”
Also on Dec. 9, the Bensalem Township Department of Public Safety hosted its annual toy drive luncheon. At Texas Roadhouse, 1545 Street Road, residents were able to stop by, greet Santa, enjoy some food and donate a toy to help bring some cheer to a child in need this holiday season.
Numerous boxes were jam-packed with donations, which ranged from basketballs and games to plush characters like Mickey Mouse.
Boxes were also overflowing at Bensalem High School, where the Marine Corps JROTC hosted its annual Toys for Tots collection.
All toys collected are on their way to the Lower Bucks County Toys for Tots warehouse, where they will be sorted and redistributed to ensure every child has a present to open this holiday season.
For the third consecutive year, the collection surpassed the previous year’s total. Bensalem High School and Valley Elementary School collected over 350 toys, stocking-stuffers and books.
Instrumental in this effort was the VIVA (Valley Inspires Volunteer Action) Service Club at Valley Elementary and its advisers, Kristin Sigovich and Kelly Tomlinson.
Master Sgt. Shawn Worthen, USMC (Ret.), Leadership Studies – Marine Instructor, has been involved with Toys for Tots for many years while in the Marine Corps and now retired, and has personally seen the impact that this program has on many children who might not otherwise get a toy. He is grateful for the support of this project.
