On June 5, a juvenile female received a phone call while she was working at a local business on Bensalem Boulevard. The caller identified himself as a police lieutenant and told her that counterfeit money had been used at the business, and that the business had to pay a fine. The caller then told the female that she had to take the money out of the register, then go to the ATM and withdraw more money for the “fine.”
She got in her car and drove to a nearby ATM machine in an attempt to withdraw money. Soon after, her father was able to locate his daughter utilizing an app on her phone before any money was transferred to the caller. At no time was she in the company of the unknown caller, and she wasn’t kidnapped. She was driving by herself until she was intercepted by her father.
Bensalem Police are currently investigating this incident to determine the identity of the caller. Bensalem Police want this incident to serve as a reminder that there are many different kinds of scams being perpetrated by phone, and that no police officer will ever call to collect a fine.
