May is National Tennis Month

Commissioner Bob Harvie presented the proclamation during a ceremony at the Core Creek Park tennis courts

The United States Tennis Association has proclaimed the month of May is National Tennis Month, and Bucks County is in “full swing” to celebrate the occasion.

On April 17, the Bucks County Commissioners issued a proclamation that “May is National Tennis Month” throughout Bucks County. Commissioner Bob Harvie presented the proclamation during a brief ceremony at the Core Creek Park tennis courts. Attendees included Bucks County Tennis Association program participants and their families, members of the Bucks County Parks and Recreation Department and BCTA representatives.

The latest research by the Physical Activity Council shows that more than 23.6 million Americans played tennis in 2022, a 33 percent increase since 2019 and the highest number of players since the PAC study began in 2007. Compared to other sports, tennis players have the lowest incidence of cardiovascular disease, and playing just three hours per week will reduce the risk of heart disease 56 percent (40-year study conducted by Johns Hopkins University).

The USTA has declared the month of May as “National Tennis Month” to encourage players, organizations, facilities, retailers, tennis manufacturers and more to promote local programs and activities at parks and facilities. This effort aims to showcase tennis and spread the word about the sport and its benefits, and to help players and nonplayers alike find courts and play opportunities in their communities, including high school team seasons, USTA league play and BCTA clinics and leagues across Bucks County as well as programs offered by commercial tennis clubs and other agencies.

Festivities continue throughout the month. On Saturday, May 20, the inaugural “Love-15 Cup” by BCTA takes place with the support of a grant from USTA Middle States. This will be a unique half-day event to include co-ed team competitions for 10 and under and 10-14 age groups as well as a co-ed Junior Varsity High School Tournament. The entire day will be implemented mainly by parent/community volunteers, with champions crowned in each division.
