Oxford Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center introduces physiatry services

Physiatry blends pain treatments and physical therapy with the goal to help patients avoid surgery

Oxford Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Langhorne has launched physiatry programming and in-center consultative support, partnering with John A. Furrey, MD, as the new program’s director. Located at 300 E. Winchester Ave., the skilled nursing facility provides post-hospital, short-term rehab and long-term residential care.

Physiatry services — also known as physical medicine and rehabilitation services — blend pain treatments and physical therapy with the goal to help patients avoid surgery. This physician-led, “whole body” approach at Oxford centers on designing, coordinating and overseeing customized rehabilitation therapies for patients while managing their medical conditions, including comorbidities. The program is tailored for individuals with a range of diagnoses and rehab needs.

Furrey, who is board certified in PM&R, specializes in treating a range of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints and muscles. He serves as the consulting physiatrist with Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic’s St. Mary Rehabilitation Hospital and is a member of the American Academy of PM&R and Spine Intervention Society.

“I am pleased to join Oxford’s dedicated team in providing progressive rehabilitation care,” said Furrey. “We are developing customized, patient-centered rehabilitative treatment plans aimed to facilitate stronger outcomes for patients and improve their quality of life.”

“The addition of physiatry programming will help maximize Oxford’s rehab services and assist in improving patients’ functional outcomes,” said Erin Popelak, regional director of market development for Marquis Health Consulting Services, which supports the facility. “Oxford is thrilled to welcome Dr. Furrey as director of physiatry. He is working hand in hand with the facility’s medical, nursing and rehabilitative teams to provide additional physician presence, oversight and care.”

Oxford maintains a four-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. It’s part of the Oxford Enhanced Senior Living campus, which also includes Oxford Crossings, a personal care component featuring a memory care unit, as well as independent living apartments.
