The Bensalem Township council unanimously approved the $4 million, 320,000-square-foot Duaime Athletic Complex project, including the John Mundy Track, at Holy Ghost Prep during its bimonthly meeting last Monday evening.

A major update to the space will include the replacement of the existing natural grass field within the track to synthetic turf. The overall structure of the track will be retained, with a new one built on the base of the existing one. Events like long jump, triple jump and pole vault will take place on both sides of the new field. The green area will be multi-use and multi-purpose for different sports.

Much work will be completed on stormwater management. As the natural grass field is removed, contractors will excavate downward to install stormwater management below the synthetic turf surface, meeting township and state ordinances. According to the project engineer, there will be a reduction in flow from the site.

Elevated, ADA-accessible bleacher stands are part of the plan, as well as a crosswalk from the field to the existing field house and four LED field lights.

Council vice president Joseph Pilieri expressed his excitement for the turf field, which will be rented out for use by other groups and organizations: “It’s the future and I’m glad to see that this is happening.”

Holy Ghost Prep president Gregory Geruson said, “Not only will it benefit our immediate community, that is the students and our families, but we’re looking forward to integrating it fully into the community of Bensalem as well. We know that neighbors love to be on our track, and we open up the facilities for lots of athletic programs.”

The anticipated start of construction is May 1, with a goal of completing the complex in time for the beginning of fall sports.
