The slogan of the recently-reopened Miracle League Playground in Northampton Township perfectly sums up its mission — “where everyone can play.”

Over the past several years, the township and Miracle League of Northampton Township have been working hand-in-hand to expand and improve upon the playground space, located at Northampton Township Municipal Park, 281 Hatboro Road in Churchville.

For those who aren’t familiar, the Miracle League offers individuals with special needs and their families recreation facilities and programs, including baseball, basketball, bowling and soccer, to provide education and social development. The league serves over 250 Bucks County and neighboring residents with disabilities.

Now, in addition to this programming, locals of all abilities and ages have a new and improved place to simply have fun.

A grand reopening and dedication was recently held at the Miracle League Playground. The event, attended by Miracle League participants, community members and elected officials, including Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, allowed guests to take in the site.

Nancy Opalka, director of the township’s Parks & Recreation department, couldn’t contain her excitement over the finished project.

“Dreams really do come true,” she said.

On hand to represent the Northampton Township board of supervisors was Kim Rose, who said, “I can’t believe we are finally here. This playground has been a project of love for many years. The Miracle League had a dream and they brought it to fruition.”

Opalka explained the importance of having such a place in the township: “Community playgrounds provide children the opportunity to develop socially, emotionally, cognitively and physically. Children are constantly developing through play, making new friends, sharing, taking turns, interacting with others. And now with the Miracle League Playground, children, regardless of ability, will be able to reap the benefits of play.”

Equipment at the playground, all a matching blue color, allows visitors to swing, spin, slide and more. All of it is designed to meet the needs of children with disabilities, though adults can also partake in the enjoyment.

Money for the project was raised via raffles, golf outings and other events, in addition to funding received from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Bureau of Recreation and Conservation; Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund; and the state Department of Community and Economic Development.

The project was also funded through a number of donations ranging from $5 to $10,000, all of which were helpful and gratefully accepted.

Additionally, in April, a number of volunteers took part in a Community Build. Led by Neshaminy Constructors and Landscape Structures, the group lent quite a few hands to help move the completion of the playground along.

“Speaking for all the Northampton supervisors, we are awed to see how our community came together to do a good deed that benefits all of us,” said Rose, who added, “What a great addition to what is already a great park.”
