Local Girl Scout troop creates ‘Little Free Libraries,’ among other year-long efforts

Troop 2113 leader Amber T. is proud of their work

Amber T., a GSEP Bucks County Girl Scout from Troop 2113, based in New Britain, recently shared all of the efforts her troop was able to accomplish this year.

“I am really proud of what our troop was able to accomplish this year,” said the troop leader. “We did our aMUSE journey and our Take Action project involved a ‘Mix It Up’ day at recess, strengthening social ties strained during COVID. The girls wrote speeches to promote this event during the morning announcements, and they kept coming back to a theme of ‘Don’t Judge a Book By Its Cover.

“We ran with the book theme for our Bronze project. We discovered there were no Little Free Libraries to find in a local town that had two Title I lower income schools. We orchestrated a letter writing campaign, brainstormed recipients and learned how to organize a mass mailing effort.

“We ran a book drive. We got a local business to purchase their own Little Free Libraries and painted it, and gave the business cases of new condition books to stock it. We paid to register area Little Free Libraries we discovered so they could be found on the regional map. We assigned each scout a route and books to replenish 32 area Little Free Libraries, including bookmarks we made with Girl Scout Laws on them. The local town now features many easy to locate libraries for the local children.

“We also donated books to Cradles to Crayons and Liberty Thrift based on condition and content.

“What I am most proud of is supporting the Bucks County Recorder of Deeds and her efforts to restore and preserve area land deeds. We donated money to sponsor a volume and now for the next 500 years, volume 67 will be designated as being supported by GSEP Troop 2113.”
