“What’s the Buzz with Beekeeping” is the featured program at the next monthly meeting of the Trevose Horticultural Society on Tuesday, May 17, at 7 p.m. at the Bensalem Senior Center, 1850 Byberry Road, Bensalem.
Beekeeping to pollinate the environment is not the only focus of guest speaker Joe Dervan’s presentation, but also beekeeping for the love of it. Dervan will discuss the basics of Beekeeping 101 for the home gardener and how to provide for the sustainability of the honeybee. He’ll also include a short tutorial on how to harvest surplus honey.
A Cornell University Master Beekeeper, Dervan is the owner of Bucks County Bee Company, which provides full-service beehive management in the Doylestown area. The company installs and manages beehives for residential and business clients, as well as provides beekeeping lessons, presentations and consulting services. Dervan is also president of the nonprofit Bucks County Beekeepers Association, which is dedicated to promoting and supporting beekeeping in the local community through education and resource sharing. A registered beekeeper with the PA Department of Agriculture, Dervan is a member of both the Montgomery and Chester county beekeepers associations, the Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild and American Beekeepers Federation. He manages about 20 hives of his own and another 20 for clients, mostly Italian and Carniolan honey bees.
All meetings are open to the public; a donation of $5 is requested from nonmembers. Call 856-866-9163, visit trevosegardeners.org or follow on Facebook for more information.
