The Bucks County Area Agency on Aging’s Health & Wellness Department is looking for Healthy Steps for Older Adults volunteer workshop instructors. Workshops take place Dec. 16 and 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bucks County Administration Building, 55 E. Court St. in Doylestown.
Healthy Steps for Older Adults is an evidence-based fall prevention program. This two-part workshop emphasizes an increased awareness of risks for falls and introduces methods to reduce falls.
Workshop part one topics include fall risk discussions, home safety, talking with your doctor, medication safety, healthy eating and a fall action plan. Workshop part two consists of a physical skills screening to find out participants’ fall risk and learning some simple fall prevention exercises to help with balance, strength, flexibility and endurance.
Volunteer instruction information:
– Training, including lunch, is free; seats are limited to four new volunteers
– Attendance to both full day trainings is required to complete instructor certification
– Prerequisite work is required and must be completed online prior to attending the first training class
– Prospective instructors will be required to register with the volunteer department and complete a background check
– All materials needed to facilitate a workshop are free and supplied during the training
– Not familiar with fall prevention? That’s OK. Because this is an evidence-based program, instructors are trained to follow and deliver a prewritten script to workshop participants.
– Certified instructors will be required to teach a minimum of one workshop (non-virtual) a year and complete recertification training every five years
