John Fernandez joins St. Mary’s Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

He specializes in microsurgery and lymphedema surgery

Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic announced that John G. Fernandez, MD, FACS, has joined the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne. Fernandez is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon specializing in microsurgery and lymphedema surgery, including vascularized lymph node transplant and lymphaticovenular bypass. Based at St. Mary, Fernandez will also see patients at two other THMA hospitals – Nazareth Hospital in Northeast Philadelphia and Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby.

After completing his undergraduate education at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, Fernandez earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed his general surgery training at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in New York, New York and his plastic surgery training at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Fernandez completed two additional fellowships in cancer research and microvascular and reconstructive surgery, both at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, New York.

Fernandez is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a member of the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He is also a fellow at the American College of Surgeons.

“We are thrilled to have a physician of Dr. Fernandez’s caliber join our Plastic and Reconstructive surgery team,” said Nathanial L. Holzman, MD, chair of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at St. Mary. “His extensive microsurgical background and specialized training in reconstruction procedures involving complex cancer cases will vastly enhance our ability to meet a growing area of need among our patients.”

Fernandez works to restore function, appearance and self-confidence through various surgical and non-surgical procedures. He has specialized training in microsurgery and extensive experience in reconstruction with perforator flaps, including DIEP flaps and other flaps for breast reconstruction. The DIEP flap is a technique that utilizes abdominal tissue to recreate the breast, while sparing the function of the abdominal muscles. Offering complex cancer reconstruction, lymphedema surgery, cosmetic surgery and body contouring after massive weight loss, Fernandez prides himself on the profound positive effect that he makes in the lives of patients.

Fernandez lives in the Philadelphia suburbs with his wife and three children. He enjoys classical music, photography and following all the Philadelphia professional sports teams.
