The Langhorne Council for the Arts announced the following upcoming events:

Chalk Walk

Chalk artists of all ages are invited to decorate sidewalks and driveways with family-friendly artwork on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 25. Rain date is Sept. 26. In the afternoon, walk around the borough to see the artwork and enjoy music from Porch Fest. If you don’t have a sidewalk or driveway in Langhorne Borough, you can decorate the sidewalk of the old library on the corner of W. Maple and Hill avenues. Pick up free chalk (one bag per household) from Borough Hall from Sept. 13-24, while supplies last.

First Annual Porch Fest

While wandering around Langhorne Borough to see the chalk art, stop by four porches to hear live music by musicians playing jazz, folk, bluegrass and Broadway show tunes on Saturday, Sept. 25, beginning at 1 p.m. Rain date is Sept. 26. Bring a lawn chair or just walk from porch to porch to take it all in. Food will be available for purchase. More details will follow.

Langhorne Rocks Project

LCA is planning a scholarship fundraiser that will feature the fun and creative “Langhorne Rocks Project” – a jigsaw puzzle of rocks painted by Langhorne “rock stars.” Volunteers are needed to paint and donate a rock for the puzzle photo. If you’re interested in having one of your rocks immortalized on a jigsaw puzzle, place one painted rock in a small ziplock bag with your name inside and drop it off at First National Bank (corner of Bellevue and Richardson avenues) in the box labeled “LCA Rock Jigsaw Puzzle.” Drop-off is until Sept. 10. One rock donation per person.

Adults and children of all ages are invited to donate. Names of donors will be listed on an insert that describes the impact the “Langhorne Rocks Project” has had on the community, especially during the pandemic. Once the group of rocks are photographed, members of LCA will hide them around town. “Langhorne Rocks” puzzles will be sold at various locations and events in Langhorne in time for holiday gift-giving. Proceeds go to scholarships for students in the arts from grades 6-11. Email LanghorneArtsEvents@gmail.com for more information.

Community members needed to plan ‘Edward Hicks Day’

One of America’s first and best-known primitive artists is Edward Hicks. He was born in what is now the Langhorne Coffee House, he learned his craft painting wagons in a shed behind the Langhorne Hotel, and he was married at the Middletown Friends Meetinghouse. The paintings of Edward Hicks reflect an idealism of peace and harmony between races of people and all of God’s creatures that resonates today.

On April 23, 2022, LCA is hosting a celebration of Langhorne’s most famous son. Some of the plans include an actor portraying Hicks, a pop-up gallery of his work, a “Peaceable Kingdom” petting zoo, period music and games, and art activities for all ages. LCA invites interested residents and representatives from local businesses, community groups and houses of worship to join in the planning. There will be a planning meeting in October to start the wheels turning. Email LanghorneArtsEvents@gmail.com to become part of the planning committee.

Artwork needed

Now that things are opening up again, the owners of Langhorne Coffee House are offering their walls as a place for local artists to display their work.

“Our interest is in framed art that can be hung for 30 to 60 days. Pieces will need pricing, and we prefer small tags that can go under the frame with details about the work,” they said. “We are open to displaying small non-framed art as well, sculptures or other crafts, if you have an artist close to your heart. Pricing usually drives purchasing – our higher-priced pieces in the past haven’t done well, so expensive framing and established artists won’t be excited by the outcomes. We will be happy to provide a bunch of social media support to the effort. We take zero commission. This is about displaying and supporting artists.”

Interested artists should email LanghorneCoffeeHouse@gmail.com for more information.
