Juniper Village at Bucks County announced the launch of its 2021 Summer Educational Series for Lifelong Learning, a series of events for the local community and Juniper Village residents presented in collaboration with Bucks County Community College. The program offers a mix of informational sessions conducted by visiting artists and expert lecturers on engaging topics and activities. Registration is required and admission is free.
The next event on Aug. 24, from 1 to 2 p.m., is “Civil War – The Battle of Antietam,” presented by John S. Benson, Esq., adjunct professor of Civil War courses at Bucks County Community College. Antietam is the deadliest one-day battle in American military history, which allowed Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.
Benson is a lifelong resident of Bucks County. As past president of the Bucks County Civil War Roundtable, he was responsible for directing the Roundtable’s efforts in purchasing a home for the Civil War Library and Museum. He has personally led more than 1,500 people on tours of the Gettysburg and Antietam National Battlefields and has authored more than 45 book reviews for two internationally recognized Civil War publications.
“A tenet of Juniper Village is to give back to the community and provide events that support the community and residents at Juniper alike,” said Tamara Moreland, executive director of Juniper Village. “Partnering with Bucks County Community College and sharing these enrichment events with the outside community and our residents helps provide an environment where people learn and grow. It decreases social isolation and leaves everyone with a positive experience.”
The first two events in the series, held in June and July, included “Exploring the History of the PA Lenape Tribe” with archeologist Matt Bieleck and “Creative Painting, Design a Summertime Birdhouse,” a workshop presented by visiting artist Antoinette Marchfelder. Registration at both events was full, and more than half of the attendees came from the community at large.
All events of the series are held at Juniper Village, an independent senior living facility located at 3200 Bensalem Boulevard in Bensalem. Visit junipercommunities.com or call 215-752-2370 for more information.
