The Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs announced the availability of $7 million in funding for entities to provide pregnancy support services or make referrals to address the needs of pregnant and postpartum women with substance use disorder.

“We are deeply committed to the health and wellbeing of mothers and children across the commonwealth,” said DDAP Secretary Jen Smith. “Meeting the needs of this vulnerable population requires a collaborative approach across the healthcare system and this funding will help assure that they are directly connected with services to help them and their newborn, or soon-to-be newborn, thrive.”

As of March 2021, approximately 500 mothers and their children have been served and were linked to evidence-based SUD treatment, specialty medical and behavioral healthcare, case management services related to employment, childcare and transportation.

The grant application, project summary and budget can be found here. Approximately 10 to 12 grants up to $600,000 each will be awarded to help provide services, streamline care, and assure that this population is connected with the most appropriate resources to reach long-term recovery.

All applications must be submitted via email to RA-DAGrantsMgmt@pa.gov by noon on Tuesday, July 13. Applications will be competitively reviewed and scored based upon the applicant’s adherence to the funding announcement guidelines, and a timely submission to DDAP. Additionally, awarding of the funds is contingent upon the approval of DDAP’s funding spending plan by SAMHSA.

The grants are part of $55 million in federal funding awarded to Pennsylvania through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant Program COVID-19 Supplemental Awards. The funding spending plan submitted by DDAP is currently pending approval by SAMHSA. More information will be shared about this funding and supporting projects as it becomes available.
