Bucks Audubon Society announces events

Enjoy butterflies, forest bathing and more next month

Bucks County Audubon Society, 2877 Creamery Road in New Hope, announced the following events for the month of July:

DIY Outdoor Herbal Candle Making Class

This takes place July 1, at 6:30 p.m. Keep bug-free this summer and don’t be afraid of mosquitoes during your July 4 picnics and outings. As part of The Art of Ecology, Marissa will guide participants around BCAS to search for and identify local herbs that can be used as insect repellent. She will instruct participants on the importance of insects to the ecosystem and how to avoid harsh insecticides with plant-based deterrents.

Each participant can expect to bring home two outdoor candles. Herbs, materials, candle jar, and refreshing herbal vodka lemonade and non-alcoholic lemonade will be provided. Event is BYOB. Admission is $35 per person. A portion of proceeds is donated back to BCAS and benefits its environmental education programming. Register online here. Email  mjacobs@theartofecology.com for more information.

All About Butterflies Virtual Event

Join on July 8, at 7 p.m. to discover butterflies during a virtual presentation by Barbara Beck, who said, “Come on a journey with me to the mountains of Mexico City where we’ll visit the overwintering monarchs. It is a magical place. Learn about monarch migration, their time in Mexico, conservation efforts, their importance to Mexican culture, and what you can do to help support monarch populations.” Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. Register online. Free.

Beautiful Butterflies: North American Butterfly Count

Join for a virtual program on July 22, at 7 p.m., for an introduction to the North American Butterfly Count, the importance of pollinators, and some identification tips for local butterfly species. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Then, on July 24, at noon, join for an in-person walk to count butterflies. Participants will head out into the BCAS property to search the gardens, meadows and fields for various local butterfly species for the count. Dress accordingly and bring water. Masks required. Registration is $3 and proceeds benefit the North American Butterfly Association. Additional donations to BCAS are appreciated. Register online.

Guided Forest Bathing

Show your love of nature and immerse yourself in the wonder of the forest on July 24, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. with Sharon Lohse, certified forest therapist, at BCAS. Participants will experience a series of invitations designed to allow participants to slow down, engage their senses and connect with the living world. This is one of the best ways to reduce stress and find solace in the moss, ferns and trees that surround the creek at BCAS. After a stroll around the grounds, enjoy a tea ceremony in the Healing Garden. Dress for the weather with appropriate footwear and a mask. Sit stools will be provided. Admission is $30 per person. Register online.

Summer Teen Conservation Corps

This is for teens ages 14-19 who are interested in learning more about conservation, environmental science, and are ready to take action to make a difference. Join BCAS’ Teen Conservation Corps each Thursday in July, from 9 a.m. to noon, to explore what it means to do environmental conservation work on the property. There will be a portion of education at the start, then participants will continue onto the property to do stream restorations, invasive removals, pollinator habitat maintenance and more. Each participant will get a free T-shirt.

The program is good for kids looking to go into the environmental field in college, want to learn more about it to see if it’s for them, or need volunteer service hours. Participants can choose which sessions to attend (just put which dates you can’t make in the notes section at check out). Register online. Free.
