Local schools join statewide call for funding

Districts are facing a revenue crunch, COVID expenses and rising mandated costs

Bucks County school leaders and education advocates were invited to speak at a regional press conference held by the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators, Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials, and PA Schools Work earlier this month. They called for greater state investment in schools and highlighted the difficult decisions local leaders face in balancing school budgets.

The event took place outside Bensalem High School. Present was Dr. Sam Lee, Bensalem Township School District superintendent; Kim Rivera, president of the Bensalem school board; Tomea Sippio-Smith, PCCY K-12 education policy director; Jason Harris, Morrisville School District superintendent; Dr. Dana Bedden, Centennial School District superintendent; state Rep. KC Tomlinson (R-Bucks); and Colleen Bell, Valley Elementary School home and school president.

The superintendents, administrators and education policy experts called on the state legislature to at least increase state funding to cover rising mandated costs this school year and the next. They said these costs should not be paid for with one-time federal dollars. Press conferences were held simultaneously in six other regions of the state.
