Bensalem students receive Honorable Mention in Mathworks Challenge

Four high schoolers produced a 32-page proposal that landed them in the top 10 percent of all submissions

Bensalem High School students have participated in the Mathworks Math Modeling Challenge the past few years. Previously, they received positive feedback from the judges. But this year, the team was awarded Honorable Mention and received a $1,000 scholarship prize.

The team’s work targeted the idea of internet access and its growth over time. In the first part of the challenge, the team was tasked with determining how much it would cost to give consumers in the US/UK internet access. In the second part, students had to predict a household’s need for the internet over the course of a year. In the last part, they had to create an optimal way of placing cell towers in a region.

Ali Ahmad, Katie Ho, Smeed Irfan and Patrick Le combined their efforts during the 14-hour challenge, producing a 32-page proposal good enough to get them into the top 10 percent of all submissions.
