St. Mary Medical Center now offers a second state-of-the-art surgical robot with the recent acquisition of the da Vinci Xi Surgical System. This new system features three-dimensional, high definition visualization and allows for enhanced dexterity and greater precision and control for surgeons. Robotic-assisted surgery is minimally invasive and can reduce a patient’s time in the hospital.

Adding a second robot has expanded community access to advanced surgical therapies, building on the existing comprehensive robotic program already in place at St. Mary. Robotic surgical treatments are available across all subspecialties, including treatments for common conditions such as hernias, as well as colorectal conditions like benign and malignant colon and rectal polyps, tumors and malignancies.

Board-certified and robotically trained surgeons Dr. Justin Harmon and Dr. Alfred Trang performed the hospital’s first procedures using the new da Vinci Xi, successfully completing a partial nephrectomy and ventral hernia repair.

Harmon serves as medical director of the Robotic Surgery Program at St. Mary, helping to lead its growing team of experienced surgeons, all of whom have completed specialized training and education in order to perform robotic surgeries at the hospital. With Harmon’s leadership, over 1,200 robotic-assisted surgeries for urological conditions have been performed since the program’s launch in 2009.

“This is a significant investment for both our hospital and community,” said Larry Brilliant, MD, president of St. Mary Medical Center. “By acquiring a second, more advanced surgical robot with the da Vinci Xi system, we’ve greatly expanded our surgical services for minimally-invasive procedures. In the last year, we’ve also added five highly trained and very experienced robotic surgeons to our team. This means Bucks County residents now have even greater access to the most advanced life-saving procedures.”

“The da Vinci Xi robot is one of the most advanced tools available for our patients,” said Harmon. “We are performing very complex surgical procedures with ease, getting patients back to their normal lives faster than ever before. It is an honor to support our robotic surgeons and I look forward to the continued expansion of our robotic program.”
