Silver Lake Nature Center, 1306 Bath Road, Bristol, is hosting a one-year anniversary hike of the Silver Lake Trail on Saturday, at 1 p.m.
For years, visitors asked staff, “Is there a trail that goes completely around the lake?” Until November 2019, the answer was “no.” Previously, the trail system went about 75 percent of the way around Silver Lake. For over a year, volunteers, staff and interns worked to connect the two ends of the preexisting trail to form a complete 3.5-mile encompassing loop.
The new Silver Lake Trail, blazed in blue, can be accessed from many points. The official trailhead is located near the Visitors’ Center. The trail traverses through many diverse habitats, including lakeshore, forest, marsh and meadows. These are some sections that offer a nice challenge to hikers, while other sections are paved walkways and boardwalks. Along the way, guests encounter beautiful views, wildlife and remnants of human history.
To celebrate the trail’s anniversary, SLNC is offering a free guided hike on Saturday, from 1 to 3 p.m. While the hike is free, donations are accepted and appreciated.
When the trail opened, staff couldn’t have imagined the importance it would play this year. People looked for peace-of-mind during the pandemic, and trail use increased by over 300 percent.
Dress for the weather and wear shoes that are appropriate for varying terrain (from rugged to smooth, and anything in between). The group will keep a brisk pace.
Pre-registration is required. Sign up at SilverLakeNatureCenter.org or call 215-785-1177.
