Silver Lake Nature Center announces November events

Hike the trails, view birds and more next month

Volunteer Work Day takes place Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. Help SLNC maintain its grounds. Be prepared to get wet and dirty. Bring a refillable water bottle. This event is rain or shine. Register online, by phone or at the Visitors’ Center.

Saturday Morning Bird Walks take place Nov. 7, 14, 21 and 28, at 7:30 a.m. These walks are free. Meet outside of the Visitors’ Center at the kiosk near the parking area.

Free Guided Walks on the SLNC Trail take place Sundays, Nov. 8 and 15, from 2 to 3 p.m. Join for this leisurely and informative walk covering seasonal topics. Meet outside of the Visitors’ Center at the kiosk near the parking area. Register online, by phone or at the Visitors’ Center.

One Year Anniversary Hike on the Silver Lake Trail takes place Saturday, Nov. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m. Join for a guided hike with a professional naturalist on the trail that goes completely around Silver Lake. When the Silver Lake Trail was opened in November 2019, SLNC didn’t imagine the importance it would play this year. Due to COVID-19, people looked for peace-of-mind enveloped in nature, and trail use increased by over 300 percent. The hike is free but donations are accepted and greatly appreciated to help maintain the trail. The 3.5-mile excursion will take guests through many different habitats and terrain, as they keep a brisk pace while enjoying the rugged trail. Dress for the weather, wear shoes that are appropriate for varying terrain (from rugged to smooth, and anything in between). Register online, by phone or at the Visitors’ Center.

Earthship Tours take place Saturday, Nov. 28, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Free. Stop by to visit and learn about these interesting, sustainable structures.

Day-off from School Camps take place Tuesday, Nov. 3 and/or Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Why only have camp in the summer when you can do it in all seasons? School Camps are scheduled for days when most schools are off. Each day provides seasonal adventures for children ages 5-14. Staff and campers spend the days exploring the forest, swamps and marsh in all weather. Dates for the 2020-21 school year include: Nov. 3 and 11; Dec. 29 and 30; Jan. 18; Feb. 15; April 1 and 2; and May 18. Cost is $60/child per day for Friends of SLNC Members; $75/child per day for non-members. Full payment is required at time of registration. Contact Kassandra Archer at 267-880-5024 or kaarcher@buckscounty.org with questions. Register online.

SLNC Nature Classes take place Mondays (Nov. 16-Dec. 21, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.), Tuesdays (Nov. 17-Dec. 22, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.), and Wednesdays (Nov. 18-Dec. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon, or 3 to 5 p.m.). Looking for a way to keep your children, ages 5-14, active and entertained after their virtual school day? Nature Classes help kids socialize in a safe way while exploring the outdoors (and using that pent up energy that’s been building up all day). This program is drop-off only, and is run by SLNC Environmental Educators. Parents are not required to stay on site, but are welcome to hike the trails on their own during this time. Cost for Friends of SLNC Members is $100 for one 6-week session. Cost for non-members is $120 for one 6-week session. Sign up for one day or all three. Register online. Contact Kassandra Archer at 267-880-5024 or kaarcher@buckscounty.org with questions.
