State Rep. Sue Helm (R-Dauphin/Lebanon), majority chairman of the House Urban Affairs Committee, touted her legislation that would provide more substantive relief for renters and mortgage owners hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and urged her legislative colleague to act quickly on House Bill 2868. The announcement came as Gov. Tom Wolf re-opened the COVID Relief-Mortgage and Rental Assistance Grant Program to accept applications until Wednesday, Nov. 4.
“I know the governor means well; however, simply extending the deadline to receive applications does not fix the problems with the program, something my legislation would do,” said Helm. “House Bill 2868 will ensure that more homeowners, landlords and tenants who lost income due to COVID-19 restrictions will receive the help they need to stay in their homes. It needs to be passed by the General Assembly and signed into law by the governor as quickly as possible.”
House Bill 2868, which awaits final passage by the House before moving to the Senate, would amend legislation enacted earlier this year to reduce barriers to participation in the grant program and allow more effective use of Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding. The legislation has bipartisan support as it passed unanimously when taken up by the House Urban Affairs Committee last month.
