Fatal traffic crash on Bristol Pike at Hulmeville Road

A 40-year-old man from Bensalem was found entrapped in his vehicle

On Monday, March 23, at 12:18 p.m., Bensalem Police were called to the intersection of Bristol Pike and Hulmeville Road for the report of a head on traffic crash. When officers arrived, they discovered that the driver of a green 2006 Nissan Altima, identified as Ronald Swanson, 40, from Cedar Avenue, Bensalem, was entrapped in the vehicle and had serious injuries to his lower extremities.

Bensalem Township firefighters and EMS personnel were able to remove the door of the vehicle and pull Swanson from the wreckage. He was transported to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, where he died from the injuries sustained in the crash.

The operator of the striking vehicle, a black 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe, was identified on scene, but his information is not being released at this time. He was also transported to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital and is currently being treated for injuries to his lower extremities.

A preliminary investigation was conducted and it appears that the Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling southbound on Route 13 and the Nissan Altima was traveling the opposite direction within the northbound lane of travel. As the Hyundai approached the intersection of Hulmeville Road, the vehicle crossed the center turning lane, entered into oncoming traffic and struck the Nissan Altima head-on.

Bensalem Police have obtained blood samples from both drivers to determine if drugs and/or alcohol were a contributing factor in this crash.

This is an active investigation. Anyone with information about this crash is asked to contact Bensalem Police at 215-633-3719. You can also provide an anonymous tip at bucks.crimewatchpa.com/bensalempd
