St. Mary Medical Center becomes first hospital in PA to upgrade CRRT systems

The 24-hour method of hemodialysis treatment removes waste from the body for individuals experiencing acute kidney injury or chronic renal failure

St. Mary Medical Center recently became the first hospital in Pennsylvania to implement a new continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) system for critically ill patients.

CRRT is a 24-hour method of hemodialysis treatment that removes waste and excess toxins from the body for individuals experiencing acute kidney injury or chronic renal failure. CRRT machines are ideal for critically ill patients who may be too unstable for traditional, intermittent hemodialysis treatments.

CRRT provides uninterrupted dialysis treatment, which helps clinical staff balance fluid and electrolyte levels for hemodynamically unstable patients.

St. Mary Medical Center recently deployed the Baxter PrisMax System, which simplifies therapy delivery and provides flexibility for hospital staff to meet the unique demands of critically ill patients. Baxter received FDA approval for its PrisMax System in July 2019. The new system improves treatment accuracy and efficiency, supporting critically ill patients and their diverse therapy needs.

“At St. Mary Medical Center, we are proud to offer innovative treatment options,” said Lawrence Brilliant, MD, FACEP, president of St. Mary Medical Center. “Our investment in a new CRRT system underscores our commitment to providing our patients with access to advanced technology and the highest quality care.”

“Our critical care team is committed to providing advanced, compassionate care,” said Peter A. Lorchak, BSN, RN, CCRN, critical care nurse manager at St. Mary Medical Center. “The implementation of state-of-the-art CRRT machines in our critical care areas ensures our patients receive the most effective dialysis treatment possible.”
