Bucks Live! presents benefit production of ‘The Vagina Monologues’

The award-winning play, updated for 2020, raises funds for A Woman’s Place domestic violence agency on Friday, Feb. 21

Bucks County Community College invites the public to a benefit production of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues on Friday, Feb. 21, at 7:30 p.m., in the Zlock Performing Arts Center at Newtown.

Updated since it first debuted 21 years ago, The Vagina Monologues is an Obie Award-winning whirlwind tour of a forbidden zone which introduces a wildly divergent gathering of female voices, including a six-year-old girl, a septuagenarian New Yorker, a woman who witnesses the birth of her granddaughter, a Bosnian survivor of rape, and many others.

Directed by Margo Weishar, this dramatically funny, tender, provocative and political play is a series of interviews with a diverse group of more than 200 women, offering new perspectives on the complexities of growing up female and the hurdles women face in overcoming misogynist conceptions of the female body.

It features a talented 10-woman cast consisting of: Carol Thompson, Lauren Kerstetter, Heidi Young Murphy, Maria Jarrell, Shelli Pentimall, Jen Newby, Diana Irvine, Carlene Lawson, Cat Miller and Shawneen Rowe.

The event also marks V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women (cisgender, transgender and those with fluid identities). To that end, there will be a post-performance discussion with the cast and representatives from A Woman’s Place, a domestic violence agency in Bucks County.

Reserved seating for The Vagina Monologues is $10 for adults and $5 for students, with proceeds benefiting A Woman’s Place. Tickets can be purchased online at bucks.edu/tickets or at the door.

The Zlock Performing Arts Center is located in the Gateway Center building on the campus at 275 Swamp Road, Newtown, where there is ample free parking. The theater is equipped with audio-loop technology for the hearing impaired.

The Vagina Monologues is part of the Bucks Live! series of innovative programs to inform, inspire and enrich greater Bucks County, brought by the Bucks County Community College Cultural Affairs Committee.
