Sample dynamic lectures, get a taste of college at preview night

The free event on Nov. 19 at Newtown features four, 30-minute lectures ranging from 1960s counterculture to the latest science of learning

Bucks County Community College invites the public to sample the college experience with the first-ever Preview Night on Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

“Four faculty members will be presenting their best 30-minute lectures, giving prospective students and their parents a chance to see what it’s like to be a student at Bucks,” said Lynn DellaPietra, Ph.D., dean of the Social and Behavioral Science Department. “The general public is welcome to sit in as well to learn from our engaging professors.”

Topics and professors are:

“How the Hippies Changed America” by Maria McGrath, Ph.D., professor, Humanities & History. Countercultural hippies indulged in sex, drugs and rock and roll, but they also created communes, natural food co-ops, and other institutions and businesses that they believed would change the world. Explore the wild and weird history of the 1960s counterculture and the far-reaching influence it had on America.

“War Ethics” by David Brahinsky, Ph.D., professor, Philosophy & Comparative Religion. Governments, including that of the U.S., have had recourse to torturing prisoners in the hope of gaining information that would ultimately save lives. This talk examines this practice from the point of view of the basic ethical theories that philosophers utilize to determine ethical rightness and wrongness.

“The Science of Learning, or Learn HOW to learn!” by Kate D’Auria, M.Ed., associate professor, Education. Research on how humans learn is transforming what teachers do in class and what students do outside of class. Find out some of the surprising and effective strategies to make the most out of your learning time and be a lifelong learner.

“Using Mindfulness Meditation to Reduce Stress” by Marianne Kepler, M.A., professor, Psychology. Learn how stress affects both the mind and body, then experience the mind/body connection through mindfulness meditation and other alternative healing practices which reduce stress and improve both physical and psychological health. These practices also improve learning for students by enhancing concentration and the ability to stay focused, while reducing anxiety.

Preview night is free and open to the public, but an RSVP is requested. Please email sb@bucks.edu with the number of attendees. The event takes place in Grupp Hall on the campus at 275 Swamp Road, Newtown, where there is ample free parking.
