Garry Cobb and other NFL alumni join Bensalem Rotary and Mud in My Cleats for 3rd annual Foot-Bowl fundraiser

Former Philadelphia Eagles player Garry Cobb had an early morning last Tuesday – he was slated to appear on Fox 29 to discuss DeSean Jackson and his injury. But that didn’t stop Cobb from joining fellow NFL alumni the evening before for what he considered a more-than-worthy excuse for being out past his bedtime – the third annual Foot-Bowl.

Taking place at Bowlero Feasterville, 100 E. Street Road, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 4, the third annual event united community members, businesses, athletes and mascots to raise money for both local student scholarships and NFL retirement funds.

Hosted by the Rotary Club of Bensalem and Mud in My Cleats, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting professional and amateur athletes with achieving their life dreams, Foot-Bowl raised $4,000 in 2018, with the NFL Players Association donating another $5,000 to the mission.

According to Marc Cohen, president of the Rotary Club of Bensalem, proceeds will help grant financial awards to students at Bensalem High School and Neshaminy High School. The remainder will be utilized by Mud in My Cleats to help players transition from the game into their next career.

Cobb, who entered the media world after retiring and can regularly be heard on 94 WIP Sports Radio, often serves as a life coach for these men.

“A lot of the guys, they just need to be pointed in the right direction. After you talk to them, you find out really what their passions are. It’s a major change. When I left the game, I didn’t realize the big change you go through. You’re going into another career,” he told The Times. “A lot of times, the thing I try to do is get the guy to utilize the skills he developed in football because you do learn to be focused, put together a plan for different goals you have. The guys do tend to be pretty motivated because you had to be in order to make it to the top level of football.”

Throughout Foot-Bowl, for $25, locals of all ages had the opportunity to bowl alongside the NFL players, get their hands on an autographed miniature football, and take photographs with their idols.

Ron Davis, who is involved with both the Rotary Club of Bensalem and Mud in My Cleats, took time to play a quick game of catch with a group of enthusiastic teens.

Additionally, guests enjoyed a hearty spread of hot dogs and pizza.

Also on hand were local Boy Scouts, members of Bensalem High School’s community service club, who were selling raffle tickets for the chance to win a plethora of baskets donated by area businesses and organizations, two Eagles cheerleaders and the one-and-only Phillie Phanatic.

Naturally, energy in the bowling alley skyrocketed to an all-time high when the city’s favorite green creature entered the building, bopping attendees with his protruding red tongue and leading the crowd in a rousing rendition of “Fly, Eagles Fly” and the Eagles chant.
