The Bucks County Community College Book Discussion Group invites the public to its free, informal monthly meetings. The gatherings take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month during the academic year at the college’s Newtown campus.
Michael Hennessey, the literature professor who convenes the meetings, said group members come from a variety of backgrounds but share a love of reading, and new readers are always welcome.
“The group has many deep thinkers interested in sustained inquiry about the state of humanity, and in learning about other cultures and how different people think,” said Hennessey, who has led the group discussion for more than two decades. “We welcome newcomers because we are interested in new perspective. You can come and just listen if you want just to get a taste of the conversation.”
The first title on the table this fall is Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder, and One Man’s Fight for Justice by Bill Browder on Thursday, Sept. 12. The nonfiction book traces Browder’s improbable journey from prep-school washout through college, business school, and a series of consulting and Wall Street jobs before becoming Russia’s largest foreign investor.
Up next for discussion is Spring: A Novel (Seasonal Quartet) by Ali Smith on Oct. 10. That will be followed by Origin Story: A Big History of Everything by David Christian on Nov. 14, and Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover on Dec. 12.
At the final meeting of 2019 on Dec. 12, the group will discuss and select titles for its meetings from January to June. Suggestions are welcome.
Founded in 1988, the Bucks County Community College Book Discussion Group meets from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month in room 114 of the Rollins Center, located near the Student Life office.
