The Bucks County Branch of the NAACP is conducting a “Know Your Rights” seminar on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Bucks County Free Library’s Bensalem branch, located at 3700 Hulmeville Road. This event takes place in lieu of the NAACP’s regularly scheduled September general meeting, which occurs every second Monday of each month.
The purpose of the seminar is to inform locals of their rights. Have you ever thought about what your rights are if during a routine traffic stop, you are asked to submit to a DNA test or a search of your vehicle? What if you are videotaping the “stop” and the officer wants to confiscate your phone? Or, how about if you go to vote as you do annually, and they say you are not on the list? What if you vote every year, but suddenly, they demand identification? What is “Gerrymandering” and why should you be concerned about it? Do you know your rights? And do you know what to tell your children, so they know what to do to be safe?
Panelists include Thomas Gannon Esq., Bucks County Deputy District Attorney; Karl Baker Esq., Philadelphia Public Defender’s Office; Donald Williford Esq.; Waqar Vick Rehman, ACLU; Peggy Dator, League of Women Voters; Rep. Tina Davis; Fred Martin, Judge of Elections; and Fred Harran, Bensalem Director of Public Safety.
“This is a seminar that is very much needed and that we are excited about presenting,” said Karen Downer, NAACP Bucks County Branch president. “Knowing your civil rights helps you to know how to be confident in asserting your rights and remaining respectful while doing so.”
