Bucks County held a recent medication collection event, with 10,085 pounds of unneeded, unused and/or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications dropped off for safe disposal.

Law enforcement officers collected the medications at 51 public locations throughout the county. All of the medications are sent out of the county for incineration, and are overseen by law enforcement personnel from the point of collection until incineration.

The most recent collection was Bucks County’s 19th since the program’s inception in 2010. Over that time, 127,252 pounds have been collected in Bucks, more than in any other Pennsylvania county.

Safe practices include storing medications properly, taking them only as prescribed, and safely disposing of both prescribed and over-the-counter medications by participating in biannual collection events or by using a permanent drop box.

People may dispose of unwanted medications freely and anonymously at one of the 37 permanent drop-off sites located primarily in police stations throughout Bucks County. A list of those locations is on the Bucks County Drug & Alcohol Commission Inc. website, bcdac.org.

In most locations, all medications will be accepted, including pills, capsules, ointments, liquids, nasal sprays, inhalers and pet medications. Needles and illicit drugs will not be accepted.
