Children with autism and ADHD can learn social skills through drama-based activities this summer

The Times

The Drama Club, located at 2307 Bristol Pike, Bensalem, is offering Acting Class Teaching Social Skills on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m., July 15-Aug. 21, with a class performance on Aug. 21. Class size is limited to provide individualized attention and training for each child.

The class is open to children ages 8–12 with a diagnosis of autism and/or ADHD. Children with autism and ADHD often have difficulty naming and understanding different emotions. Making and keeping friends can be challenging for them because they often miss important social cues. Research has shown that teaching social skills through the medium of drama is a highly effective way to build these skills in children with autism and ADHD.

The Drama Club has teamed up with occupational therapist Susan Pernice, MS OTR/L, to design and implement a new class which specifically teaches social skills to children with autism and ADHD through a variety of drama-based and sensory-based games and activities. Children will also participate in an acting performance at the end of the season. Through the program, children will receive the therapeutic benefits of participating in the arts, while also having the opportunity to build teamwork skills, confidence and friendships with like-minded peers.

Cost for the six-week session is $520. Register by June 1 by calling 215–469–2109 or emailing info@thedramaclubpa.com. For more information, visit thedramaclubpa.com
