From April 8–14, animal lovers across America are encouraged to show support for the lifesaving work of their own local shelters

April 2019 will mark the 150th anniversary of animal sheltering and adoptions in the U.S., commemorating the founding of Women’s Animal Center in Philadelphia as America’s First Animal Shelter. To celebrate this milestone, animal shelters throughout the nation, as well as their supporters, are invited to participate in the inaugural Animal Shelter National Day of Service.
During the week of April 8–14, animal lovers across America are encouraged to show support for the lifesaving work of their own local shelters through acts of kindness, big or small.
“There are so many ways for people to become involved, from donating food to volunteering their time,” said Catherine Malkemes, chief executive officer of WAC. “Simply sharing a post on social media about an adoptable pet could ultimately help to save a life.”

Together with its shelter, rescue and advocacy partners, WAC encourages families, pet owners, schools, senior groups, churches, synagogues and individuals to participate in this national initiative by supporting the vital work of animal shelters at the local level.
WAC offers tips on how citizens can participate: adopt a pet, foster a pet, volunteer, donate money, donate supplies, organize a party, fundraising event or collection drive, spread the word, advocate, be a responsible pet owner, and say ‘thank you’ to shelter staff.
