On Valentine’s Day, many people look for love from other humans. But they should never take for granted the love of a pet. Animals have endless loyalty toward their owner, making the love from a pet incomparable.
Women’s Animal Center focuses on this very special connection every day of the year, and at Valentine’s Day, reminds everyone to value each moment with their pets. It’s also the ideal time to open one’s heart to a homeless animal.
Women’s Animal Center is running a one-day-only adoption special on Feb. 14, featuring $30 adult cats and pit bulls. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip, up-to-date vaccinations and vet care, and a lifetime of love.
“We see love everyday on the faces of people who come in to adopt an animal, or who bring in their pet for a wellness check-up or for treatment in our hospital for a serious illness,” said Catherine Malkemes, chief executive officer of Women’s Animal Center. “There is so much care and compassion involved in what we do — not only for our shelter animals and the pets in our community, but for the people who love them.”
This year is the 150th anniversary of Women’s Animal Center, formerly known as the Women’s Humane Society.
“When you think about the launch of WAC, America’s First Animal Shelter, it really started with the love and dedication of a group of women who were determined to save lives,” said Malkemes. “Fifty years before women could vote, our founders struck out on their own, spoke their minds about how animals should be treated and ultimately changed the way society thought about the animals that now share their lives. These selfless women brought so much love into the world, and it can be felt through the present day.”
In addition to the unconditional love from a pet, there are many other health benefits humans receive from ownership.
“Pets are known for providing owners with numerous health benefits, from improving mental health to enhancing overall mood,” said Michele Dickey, VMD, medical director of WAC. “The №1 health benefit of owning a pet is stress relief. Petting an animal for just a few seconds results in reduced blood pressure, putting stress hormones at ease. Loving a pet not only improves the life of an animal, but it enhances the life of a human.”
