Rep. Gene DiGirolamo (R-Bucks) was recently reappointed by House Speaker Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Legislative Oversight Committee in the Pennsylvania General Assembly.

“It is an honor to again serve on this committee,” DiGirolamo said. “As an original member of the Pennsylvania Athletic Oversight Council, which was a predecessor to this committee, for more than 18 years I have worked to ensure that interscholastic athletics are administered effectively and fairly for all high school students. While my children are now grown, they enjoyed playing high school sports, which helped put them on the path to success.”

The six-member oversight committee is comprised of three members of the House and three members of the Senate. Four of the six are Republican, with the remaining two Democrats. It reviews the PIAA compliance with 13 legislative mandated reforms and responds to issues related to PIAA activities referred to the committee.

Oversight of the PIAA by the Pennsylvania Athletic Oversight Council, which included members of the Legislature, began in 2000 after the General Assembly enacted legislation to require the PIAA to enact specific reforms that were designed to improve the financial condition and management of high school athletics in the Commonwealth. After the council issued a final report in 2004, the General Assembly created the PIAA Legislative Oversight Committee to oversee the continued compliance of the PIAA with Act 91 of 2000.
