The Bucks County Community College Book Discussion Group invites the public to its free, informal monthly meetings. The gatherings take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month during the academic year at the college’s Newtown campus.
Michael Hennessey, the literature professor who has led the discussions for nearly two decades, said group members come from a variety of backgrounds but share a love of reading, and new readers are always welcome.
“The group has many deep thinkers interested in sustained inquiry about the state of humanity, and in learning about other cultures and how different people think,” he said. “We welcome newcomers because we are interested in new perspectives. You can come and just listen if you want just to get a taste of the conversation.”
The group chooses titles from a variety of genres, including nonfiction, and doesn’t shy away from politics, which will be visited in the January discussion.
“It might get a little heated, but in general, people respect differing opinions,” Hennessey said.
The first title on the table for the new year is the nonfiction Death of a Nation: Plantation Politics and the Making of the Democratic Party by Dinesh D’Souza on Thursday, Jan. 10. In a major new work of historical revisionism, D’Souza makes the provocative case that democrats are the ones killing America by turning it into a massive nanny state modeled on the southern plantation system.
Founded in 1988, the BCCC Book Discussion Group meets from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month in room 114 of the Rollins Center, located near the Student Life office. The campus is located at 275 Swamp Road, Newtown. For more information, contact Hennessey at Michael.Hennessey@bucks.edu or 215–968–8164.
