Bucks County Community College’s women’s basketball team donated several dozen canned goods to support Shady Brook Farms’ food drive for Bucks County residents in need for the holidays.

In Bucks County, more than 57,000 people are food insecure, with 32 percent of them children, according to the Hunger Nutrition Coalition of Bucks County.

Head women’s basketball coach Andre Bright said the idea to participate began as a team-bonding event, but quickly developed into much more.

“Once I found out that Shady Brook Farm was conducting a canned food drive, I thought this would be a great way to get involved with having an impact for deserving families in the area,” Bright said. “It also helps to educate the players on important issues affecting the community.”

In his inaugural year as head coach, Bright said the team plans to schedule other events to promote helping others. The Philadelphia native began last season as an assistant coach and was promoted to head coach prior to this season. His passion for coaching basketball, along with his positive attitude, has had an effect with building some excitement among the Bucks County students.

Women’s basketball is one of 14 intercollegiate sports offered by Bucks County Community College’s athletic department. The Centurions compete in Division III of the NJCAA, Region IX. To learn more, visit bucks.edu/athletics
