Bensalem High School seniors Abdullah Mahmood and Amy Truong have been named “Commended Students” in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented to these scholastically talented seniors by BHS principal, William Ferrara.
Commended students are recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test used for program entry. They are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
Mahmood has been a principal’s list honor roll student throughout high school and an AP scholar. He is a member of National Honor Society, Community Service Club, Kick Butts Generation and the tennis team. He placed second in a Veterans of Foreign Wars Regional Essay Competition. Out of school, he enjoys reading and volunteering at Juniper Village. Mahmood plans on going to medical school and become an ophthalmologist.
Truong is an AP scholar and has been on the principal’s list honor roll throughout high school. She is a member of Community Service Club and Multi-Cultural Club. Out of school, Truong plays volleyball and the piano. She plans to go to college and major in psychology.
