The Monmouth University Polling Institute last week released a poll showing Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick leading Democrat Scott Wallace, 50 percent to 46 percent, among likely voters.

Fitzpatrick leads among men, women and white people.

Wallace is ahead among blacks, Asians and Latinos.

“When you look at the underlying political environment in this district, you would expect the Democrat to be ahead. But Fitzpatrick has been able to overcome this with a solid reputation among his constituents, while many remain uncertain about Wallace,” said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute.

Former President Barack Obama last week took to Twitter to endorse numerous Democratic candidates across the country.

Among those whom Obama backed was Scott Wallace, running in the 1st Congressional District.

Obama tweeted, “Today, I’m proud to endorse even more Democratic candidates who aren’t just running against something, but for something — to expand opportunity for all of us and to restore dignity, honor, and compassion to public service. They deserve your vote.”

The campaign of U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick is complaining that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is running a television ad that falsely claims the congressman voted against protecting individuals with pre-existing conditions from losing their health insurance three times.

The ad, according to the Fitzpatrick campaign, cites bills that have not even been voted on in Congress.

Fitzpatrick is a cosponsor of H.R. 6898, the Maintaining Protections for Patients with Pre-Existing Conditions Act of 2018, and H.R. 1121, the Pre-existing Conditions Protections Act of 2017. Fitzpatrick opposed the repeal of the Affordable Care Act last year.

Genevieve Malandra, spokeswoman for the Fitzpatrick campaign, said, “To deliberately cite bills that have not even been voted on and have nothing to do with pre-existing conditions is flat-out dishonest and a desperate smear. The Wallace campaign has yet to cite or produce any substantive votes and is resorting to blatant lies.

“This latest ad is false, deceptive and a flat-out desperate lie intended to distract from Scott Wallace’s support for a single-payer, government takeover of healthcare. Scott Wallace’s single-payer healthcare scheme would jeopardize the employer-sponsored health insurance of millions of Americans, bankrupt the country with its $32 trillion price tag, as well as limit the options of patients. The DCCC needs to take down the TV ad, and Scott Wallace needs to remove its mention from his website’s homepage.” ••
